Agendas for Future Meetings

Agenda for meeting in Malmo 2008-04-10

Goals

Media Center

Establish at least one media center with access to computers and the Internet. At least some of the computers need to be powerful enough for audio and possibly video editing.

Group contact: rickard

Media Center Specification

Film, Audio, Photo and Text Archive

Film and photograph the talks for documentation purposes. Record sound and translations from talks. Archive these films and audio recordings with accompanying texts, slides and anything else the speaker(s) want to go along with the documentation in a searchable archive.

Some of the media in the archive will be contributed by members of this group, but the bulk will be, we hope, contributed from everyone at the ESF 2008.

Archive Specification

about previous SF memory experiences

Anthology

Use, for instance, material from the archive above and a call for articles and publish an anthology in book form covering the entire ESF 2008 event.

Streaming Media

Possibly arrange for real time streaming media across the Internet, perhaps at least audio but possibly also video, from at least some of the ESF 2008 locations.

Streaming Media

Real-Time Text and Backchannel

Arrange for more or less real time text descriptions of talks and workshops and a backchannel for off-site participants.

Backchannels

Forum Newspaper

Publish a (daily?) paper during the entire forum. Archive this in the same archive as above.

Group contact: Monique, not yet on OpenESF. Can someone please fill in contact details?

Use Free Software

Use free software as much as possible.

What do we need?

  1. More volunteers! We need, for example, people to staff the helpdesk in the media center(s) at all times, web programmers that can help modify an automatic archive system (if found), film camera operators, film and audio editors, et cetera.
  2. Computers. We can make do with old ones for use as thin clients in the media center, but we need at least some servers and some rather new computers for audio and video editing.

We also need a server-class computer (or several) for use as a CPU server for the thin clients, another for the streaming servers and possibly the archive.

We also need encoding computers for audio (MP3 and Ogg?) (and video?) on site in every location we want to cover. But see cameras below.

  3. Network access in the areas we want to record talks in, preferably both wired and WiFi. Network access for the media center, preferably with our own WiFi for everyone to use. Network access with plenty of bandwidth for the streaming server.
  4. Video cameras, preferably digital. One per ESF 2008 location would be nice, but that might be a bit too ambitious.

It would be very nice to have digital surveillance cameras that encode MPEG-4 or H.264 themselves and we can stream directly to our archive.

  5. Audio recording equipment. Use existing PA and perhaps ALIS people for this? Do we get spoken translations we can use as a sound source? Use audio input on surveillance cameras?
  6. Paper and printing facilities for the newspaper.
